BARIPADA: The infrastructure is in place, administrative manpower has been sanctioned and doctors have been posted. The Baripada District Headquarters Hospital, which has been given approval to be upgraded as a Government Medical College and Hospital (MCH), awaits a letter of permission from the Medical Council of India to be fully operational.

After being sanctioned by the Centre, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik laid the foundation stone for 100-seat MCH at Rangamatia in 2015.  The hospital, named after Pandit Raghunath Murmu, is located about 5 km from Baripada DHH and is set to cater to the patients from Mayurbhanj, its neighbouring districts of Balasore and Keonjhar besides the States of West Bengal, Jharkhand and Bihar.

Stating their readiness to carry out the services at any moment, Hospital Assistant Superintendent Dr Pranab Sankar Das said upgradation and renovation work are complete, technical equipment are in place and almost all infrastructure required for a Government MCH as per MCI guidelines are in place. The MCI team visited the hospital in December while work was in progress and expressed satisfaction over infrastructure development, he said, adding that they are slated to come on a surprise visit any time soon.

A high rank official of the hospital said out of 304 existing beds, 90 are for general surgery, 72 for medicine, 44 for obstetrics and gynaecology, 30 for orthopaedics, 24 for paediatrics, 10 each for ophthalmology and ENT and 8 beds each for pulmonary medicine, skin and vulnerable disease and psychiatry.  Doctors and nurses for different departments have already been posted, the official added.

Besides infrastructure, three hospitals have been allotted as training centres, an essential part of MCH.

Krushna Chandrapur (KCPur) Hospital is designated as rural health centre, Debendrapur Health Centre is designated as urban health training centre and Bangiriposi Health Centre is the designated rural health centre.  The only area of concern is shortage of staff in other departments. Departments like laboratory technician, radiographer and pharmacist are being managed by the existing staff which is not sufficient to provide 24 hours services once the DHH starts operating as MCH, he added.  Dr Das said the Health department has been informed about  readiness. The hospital is waiting for Letter of Permission from the Medical Council of India.
