PHULBANI: A minor girl allegedly committed suicide in her in-laws’ house on Monday as she was unhappy with her forcible marriage. She belonged to K Nuagaon village.

The girl was apparently married to Chandan Behera of Salaguda village under Sarangada police limits by her parents, Koushik Sahu and Dina on April 15.

Police said the Sahu couple had earlier tried to marry off their daughter on March 2 but it was stopped by the Child Development Protection Officer and the District Child Protection unit. The Sahu couple and bridegroom’s parents Sabata Behera and Rashmita Behera were let off with an undertaking that the marriage will not be solemnised as the girl is a minor. However, both the families went ahead with the wedding on April 15. The girl was left at Behera’s house by her parents. Unhappy with this, she ended her life.  Sarangada police seized the body.

District Child Protection unit Director  Rabindranath Panda said legal action will be taken against both the families.
