Prisoner attempts suicide in Odisha

A prisoner lodged in Allipingal sub jail allegedly attempted suicide by consuming an old battery of a transistor on Wednesday.

JAGATSINGHPUR:  A prisoner lodged in Allipingal sub jail allegedly attempted suicide by consuming an old battery of a transistor on Wednesday.

Deepak Rout of Ashia village under Erasama police limits was sentenced to seven years imprisonment by Chief Judicial Magistrate, Jagatsinghpur, for kidnapping a contractor and opening fire.


Jail Superintendent Sujit Kumar Raul said, some miscreants threw the battery from outside and Rout picked it up. Rout consumed the old battery which he found in his prison cell in and started vomiting. As his condition deteriorated, medical team rushed to the spot and shifted him to District Headquarters Hospital, Jagatsinghpur. His condition has improved after treatment, Raul added.


Rout and his three aides had demanded Rs 5 lakh extortion from one contractor Gangadhar Jena in November 2014. When he refused to meet their demand, they kidnapped Jena and also opened fire to terrorise him. The three were arrested by Balikuda police during a raid and forwarded them to court.

The CJM convicted them to seven years rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 23,000 each last year.
