Housing scheme scam comes to fore

Residents in the district alleged discrepancies in selection of beneficiaries and allotment of grants under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY).

JAGATSINGHPUR:Residents in the district alleged discrepancies in selection of beneficiaries and allotment of grants under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY).

A resident of Thakurpatana village under Jagatsinghpur Municipality, Babaji Prusty, had apparently received the work order for construction of his house under this scheme last June. While 227 other beneficiaries received the first instalment of the grant worth `70,000, he claimed to have not received the same.

When he sought the intervention of the Chairman and Executive Officer of Jagatsinghpur Municipality in the matter, an enquiry was conducted. After investigation, it was apparently found that Prusty’s instalment was wrongfully credited to the account of Puspa Devi in Uttar Pradesh. Prusty claimed that he had not received the amount till date.

Admitting that Prusty’s grant was wrongfully credited to the account of a person from Uttar Pradesh, the Executive Officer of Jagatsinghpur Municipality said the local body had released the second instalment of  `60,000 in his favour.

Meanwhile, a widow, Sasmita Barik, and another person Purnachandra Mohanty alleged that they had been deprived of the benefits of the scheme for not being able to bribe the officials of Naugaon block. The duo claimed that the local officials took bribe from a family for providing housing benefits to three of its members.

Jagatsinghpur Municipality had apparently set a target of providing PMAY benefits to 1,000 individuals. However, the work order had been given to 227 beneficiaries only.
