BERHAMPUR: In a shocking incident, a mentally retarded man killed an elderly woman and her minor granddaughter in Badiamba village within Hinjili police limits of Ganjam district on Sunday.
The accused, identified as Ranjan Sethy (40), entered his neighbour’s house and stabbed four-year-old Sriya Sethi and her grandmother 65-year-old Kama Sethi. Hearing the screams of the injured duo, other family members rushed to the room and found them in a pool of blood with Ranjan standing nearby holding a sharp weapon.
While the minor girl was found dead on the spot, her grandmother was rushed to MKCG Medical College and Hospital but succumbed to her injuries. The family members overpowered Ranjan, tied him and gave him a sound bashing. Not satisfied with the beating, some villagers tried to set the accused on fire along the roadside. However, police rushed to the spot after being informed and rescued Ranjan from the irate villagers. In his complaint lodged with Hinjili police later on the day, son of Kama Mitu Sethy accused Ranjan of murdering his mother and daughter due to old enmity. The ghastly double murder has spread shockwaves in the area. Further investigation is on.
