Botched cataract op: 8 admitted to pvt hospital

CUTTACK: A group of patients, who underwent cataract surgeries at SCB Medical College and Hospital, were recently admitted to a private hospital after they developed eye infection.

As per reports, 12 patients had undergone cataract surgery at SCBMCH last week. The hospital had discharged them next day. However, 8 of them developed infection following which they were admitted to JPM Rotary Eye Hospital here.

“My mother Santilata had undergone cataract surgery at SCBMCH along with other patients on December 7. After reaching home on Friday, she developed acute pain in her operated eye besides symptoms of water oozing from it following which I contacted the SCB doctor concerned who advised to administer some injections either from JPM Rotary Eye Hospital in Cuttack or LV Prasad Eye Hospital in Bhubaneswar saying that her eyes had been infected,” said Rabindra Das of Jasapada in Cuttack.

An expenditure of around `10,000 has already been incurred towards removing pus cell, he added.
SCBMCH Superintendent, Prof. Shyama Kanungo said she has no concrete information about the alleged matter. “I will find out on Wednesday under what circumstance the cataract operated patients were admitted to private hospital,” she said.

Two of the 8 patients have been discharged till the report was last filed, said Kanungo.
