120 fall ill after eating food at marriage feast

KENDRAPARA: As many as 120 persons including 50 children and women of Jamadhar village in the district were hospitalised after consuming stale food at a marriage feast on Friday.

Sources said residents of Jamadhar had gone to attend a marriage at Katikata village as part of the groom’s party. After eating the food there, many people complained of vomiting and nausea. Those affected were rushed to the district headquarters hospital at Kendrapada.  

Akhtar Ali, a villager of Jamadhar, said people started vomiting and complained of severe lower abdomen pain after consuming food at the marriage feat of Salauddin Ali’s daughter. Similarly, 10-year-old Nagma Khatun said she started feeling uneasy and threw up soon after taking the food.

Uncle of the bride Sabir Ali said, “We had invited many people to the feast. After having the food, some of them fell sick. We are yet to know what happened to them.”

Chief District Medical Officer (CDMO) Dr Baishnab Charana Sahoo said, “It is a case of food poisoning. The affected persons were provided necessary treatment and their condition is stable now. We will soon send the food samples to a laboratory at Cuttack for testing.”

Sub-Collector of Kendrapara Kanhu Charana Dhir said “An inquiry would be conducted into the incident. We have directed the department concerned to collect the food samples.”
