JEYPORE: THE ruling BJD emerged victorious in Koraput district. While the party won 24 seats out of the total 29, Congress managed to bag just four and BJP could win only one seat (Borrigumma zone) in the three-tier Panchayat election, the results of which were declared on Saturday.

In the last rural polls too, the Congress had won four Assembly seats of Jeypore, Koraput, Kotpad and Laxmipur. This time, although party leaders like Tara Prasad Bahinipati massively campaigned for their candidates, Congress could manage two ZP seats in Kundra zone, one in Kotpad zone and one in Potangi zone. The Congress lost in Laxmipur, Bandhugam, Jeypore, Boipariguda, Dasmantpur, Narayanpatana, Koraput and Lamtaput, where it had won previously.

While Congress leaders attributed the victory of BJD to use of money and muscle power, political observers pointed out that there was no communication between the party leaders and voters in the last two years which led to the poll debacle. In the last Zilla Parishad  election, Congress had 14 seats and BJD 15.
The BJP, on the other hand, put its candidates in the rural polls here for the first time. It performed well in Nandapur, Borrigumma, Kotpad and Boipariguda zones.

“The party candidates did well because of voters’ support and welfare schemes of Prime Minister Narendra Modi”, said district BJP president Bijoy Mishra.
The ruling BJD got absolute majority by winning 24 of the 29 ZP seats. “The welfare works initiated by Naveen Patnaik has helped the party win,” said BJD leader Rabi Nanda. The victory would be helpful for Nanda in the next General Election to be held in 2019, observers said.
