Three traffic cops stabbed by two helmetless youths

BHUBANESWAR: Two miscreants on Tuesday went on a stabbing spree on traffic personnel in broad daylight at AG Square here. Three policemen were injured in the attack.

Sources said the youths, who were riding a motorcycle without wearing helmet, were intercepted by the traffic police deployed for a routine motor vehicle enforcement. One of the miscreants was identified as Anil Rout of Bhadrak.

When they were asked to produce driving licence and vehicle document, the pillion rider took out a knife from a bag and stabbed the constables who sustained injuries on neck, shoulder and hand, Traffic ACP Jatindra Panda said.

The incident occurred at around 12.30 pm, a few minutes before Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik’s carcade passed AG Square, close to the Traffic Police Station.

The injured constables Rohan Swain and Gyana Swain and Odisha Armed Police Force (OAPF) officer Mahendra Biswal were rushed to Capital Hospital.

The miscreants were arrested and handed over to Capital Police, said Police Commissioner Yogesh Bahadur Khurania who rushed to Capital Hospital to take stock of the situation. The injured police personnel will be awarded for bravery, he added.
