CUTTACK: Tension ran high on the premises of SCB Medical College and Hospital following confrontation of a doctor with police over illegal parking of car on Friday.

Sources said as a part of special drive against illegal parking on SCBMCH premises, a team of local police was engaged in removing illegally parked vehicles.

Meanwhile, Dr Chitta Ranjan Kar of Nephrology department was getting down from his car after parking it in front of old Medicine Ward near the Casualty. Finding the doctor’s car in no parking zone, Additional IIC, Mangalabag police station Abhimanyu Das asked the driver to remove the vehicle. Instead of removing the car, the driver started arguing with him. Meanwhile, Dr Kar intervened and misbehaved with Das.

The incident took an ugly turn as both the police officer and the doctor confronted each other. Later, Das filed an FIR in this regard with Mangalabag police following which a case was registered against Dr Kar. On the other hand, medical students staged a dharna on the premises of SCBMCH protesting the police action. The agitating students demanded an apology from the police personnel failing which they threatened to resort to cease work from Saturday.

Meanwhile, a fact finding team of Odisha Police Association (OPA) reached Mangalabag police station.
OPA Secretary Jyoti Ranjan Samantary said such an action is not expected from doctors and medical students of SCBMCH as the police were performing their duty for betterment of the hospital. ‘‘An impartial investigation into the incident will be conducted and action initiated as per law against the person found guilty,’’ Samantaray said.
