BHUBANESWAR: A day after three college girls and their male companion were harassed and assaulted on Nandankanan road in the city, the Commissionerate Police is yet to nab the miscreants. While the police claim to have identified six out of 10 miscreants who collectively heckled and abused the youths, their whereabouts remain a question for the cops.

Sources said the police had carried out intensive patrol and searches at Raghunathpur where the suspects reportedly belong to. However, they have fled from their houses and possibly took Athagarh or Cuttack route to escape from Bhubaneswar, a senior police official said.

“We have intensified raids in areas surrounding Raghunathpur, Nandankanan, Chandaka and Barang. So far, a two-wheeler used by one of the assaulters has been seized,” said a police official when queried about the status of investigation in the case.

A seized motorcycle bears a registration plate which does not clearly show the numbers. Sources said it has been a practice among the unscrupulous elements to use distorted number plates. By using those, the vehicles cannot be easily identified, once these people hurl abuses and escape at a high speed.

The seized motorcycle has a registration number ending with 1711. The complainant mentioned that the bike number ending with 11 in the FIR. The first two numbers were invisible, sources said.

The incident has instilled fear among college students who frequent the Patia-Nandankanan route on weekends. Such incidents have become an usual affair, said Sumit Nanda, the student of a private university in the city.

“The miscreants use the under-construction buildings located on either sides of the road as a hideout for consuming alcohol and other illegal activities. Eve-teasing and passing vulgar comments to young boys and girls are pastime activities for these elements,” added Sumit.
