No arrest yet in woman ostracisation

BARIPADA: A group of persons of Krushna Chandra Pur (KC Pur) village under Betnoti police limits of Mayurbhanj district has fled the village apprehending  arrest for ostracising a married woman, who, against the wishes of her husband, pursued higher education. Although a police case has been registered in this connection, no arrest has been made yet.


Subasini Singh (22) on Friday filed a complaint at Betnoti police station against her husband Kamalakanta Singh besides, Ward Member and Sarpanch of the village. After passing matriculation, Subasini got married to Kamalakanta and the couple has a four-year-old daughter. Two years back, she expressed her interest in pursuing a diploma course which did not go down well with her in-laws. She, however, enrolled herself in a diploma course in civil engineering at a college in Chitroda village nearby.

Kamalakanta and his parents placed the matter before the village committee 15 days back and on Tuesday, a kangaroo court was held where the village heads, including Sarpanch and Ward Member, asked Subasini to stop studying further and do household chores. When she refused, they ostracised her from the village. Subsequently, she shifted to her parents’ house at Dantiamuha village.


Subasini said she is unable to go to college now after being threatened by villagers of KC Pur. The woman sought stringent action against all the accused in the case.IIC of Betnoti police station Minati Biswal said some villagers of KC Pur had come to the police station on Friday night seeking settlement of the case. Subasini had  registered a complaint against Kamalakanta, Ward Member Mina Singh and Sarpanch Gopal Singh. Police, however, refused to entertain the demand as the FIR has already been registered. Biswal said the accused will be arrested soon.
