Two arrested for cheating job seekers of Rs 9 lakh

Two persons were arrested by Jajpur police on Sunday on charges of duping dozens of job seekers of lakhs of rupees by promising them jobs in major steel companies.

JAJPUR: Two persons were arrested by Jajpur police on Sunday on charges of duping dozens of job seekers of lakhs of rupees by promising them jobs in major steel companies. The arrested are Sangram Keshari Ray of Avimanyu Balia and Sadhana Priyadarshini Samal alias Runu of  Bahadur Nagar village in Jajpur district.

Police were in search of the two after one of the job seekers, who was cheated, lodged a complaint at local police station on November 11, 2015. The two had duped job seekers of `9 lakh.The complainant, Santosh Kumar Swarnakar of Debigadaghat under Jajpur municipal limits, had stated that he had given `85,000 to the two after they promised him a job in Jindal Stainless Limited at Kalinga Nagar  claiming to be senior officials posted in the company.

On other occasions, Sangram and Sadhana cheated several other job seekers, most of whom are relatives and friends of Swarnakar, with the same promise. As the accused failed to provide jobs, the aspirants approached the two, who he kept on buying time, police said.

“When the accused failed to provide job to us as promised, we asked them to refund the money. But both the accused absconded,” said Swarnakar. “Our efforts to contact them over phone also went in vain,” he added.

“On a tip off, we reached the house of Sangram at his native village and asked for the refund. But the accused threatened us with dire consequence. Finding no way out, I lodged a complaint with local police against Sangram and Sadhana in November 2015,” he said.

Police arrested them from their native places, said Prasanta Kumar Malha, IIC of Jajpur town police station.The arrested were forwarded to court and remanded in judicial custody after their bail pleas were rejected.
