Facebook expose on absence of staff in Odisha hospital

Tension ran high at SCB Medical College and Hospital here following a confrontation between hospital staff and an attendant over live streaming of the hospital affairs on Facebook on Monday morning.

CUTTACK: Tension ran high at SCB Medical College and Hospital here following a confrontation between hospital staff and an attendant over live streaming of the hospital affairs on Facebook on Monday morning.

As per reports, one Ramakant Bhoi (36) of Tirtol in Jagatsinghpur had brought his ailing six-month-old daughter, reportedly suffering from fever, to SCBMCH for treatment.
He reached the Emergency ward of Pediatric department at about 6 am and found the doctor, nurse and staff absent.

‘’After waiting for a long time, no staff turned up. I wanted to apprise people of Odisha as well as the Government about such a shoddy state of affairs at SCB and hence, started recording the scene of the ward and went live on Facebook,’’ said Bhoi.

After live streaming for about 40 minutes, a nurse found Bhoi engaged in the act and informed others following which some junior doctors reached the spot and misbehaved with him. They snatched away the mobile phone from him and threatened him if he continued with his act.

As the situation worsened, police rushed to the spot and took Bhoi to SCB police outpost. Later, police released Bhoi after finding out that he contested the 2014 Assembly election from Tirtol constituency as a BJP candidate.

Meanwhile, BJP leader Samir Dey condemned the incident and termed it unfortunate. “Doctors and staff should be present round the clock in emergency ward. Their absence affects emergency health service. This is unfortunate,’’ Dey said.
