BHUBANESWAR: THE Central Bureau of Investigation on Wednesday booked Director of Indian Institute of Technology (IIT)-Goa Dr Barada Kanta Mishra for allegedly amassing property worth `1.14 crore disproportionate to his known sources of income.

He is accused of indulging in corruption during his tenure as Director of Institute of Minerals and Materials Technology (IMMT) at Bhubaneswar between April 2006 and March 2017.
The CBI conducted raids on his residence at Surya Nagar and IMMT campus here and his IIT-Goa office and seized incriminating documents.

The CBI sources said Mishra possessed movable and immovable assets worth `3.79 lakh in 2006. However, by the time his stint ended at IMMT-Bhubaneswar, Mishra and his family owned assets to the tune of `2.19 crore by the end of August 2016.

While the former IMMT Director had earned just over `2.32 crore, which includes the earning of his wife during the period, he spent nearly `1.31 crore on domestic expenses, including purchasing a car, making advance payment on purchasing a flat, house loan repayment and educational expenditure of his children, the CBI stated in its FIR.

“It means Mishra’s savings during the period were `1.01 crore. But he had acquired assets (movable/immovable) to the tune of `2.15 crore. Hence, he is in possession of disproportionate assets to the tune of `1.14 crore to his known sources of income,” the CBI has stated.

An inquiry was instituted to verify the income and expenditures of the former IMMT Director which revealed that Mishra amassed assets worth over `1.14 crore which have not been satisfactorily accounted for.

The prima facie facts establish commission of a cognisable offence, following which a case has been registered against the academician under Sections 13 (2) and 13 (1) (a) of the Prevention of Corruption (PC) Act, a senior CBI official said.
