ANGUL: A group of activists of People for Animals from Talcher embarked on a cycle tour on Friday to New Delhi for the cause of animals. They would meet  Prime Minister Narendra Modi to apprise him about cruelty to animals.

Led by the outfit’s secretary, Kuna Kumar Sahu, the team includes Sanjeev Mishra, Dhadia Sahu and Malaya Sahu. They started the tour from the Sub-Collector’s office in Talcher and will travel 1,700 km to reach New Delhi after criss-crossing seven States on cycle.

Kuna said the team members will meet the PM to apprise him about lack of proper implementation of laws to prevent animal cruelty in the country, particularly in Odisha.

They will also speak to him about rampant cattle smuggling and operation of illegal slaughter houses in the State. Their other demand is to confer Bharat Ratna on former chief minister Biju Patnaik.

“We have intimated the Prime Minister’s Office about our cycle journey,” said Kuna, who has been running the outfit for the past several years without any government help. Although he had tried to meet Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik prior to the journey, Kuna did not get an appointment.
