Diarrhoea outbreak exposes poor sanitation in Odisha town

BERHAMPUR: Diarrhoea continued to spread in Kabisuryanagar town. The water-borne disease, which broke out on March 25, has claimed one life and affected more than 100 people so far.

The outbreak of diarrhoea has exposed the poor sanitary system in the town. With the sanitary staff of Notified Area Council on strike over their demands for the last five days, the situation has only worsened. Drains remain choked and emit a foul smell, filthy water enters damaged pipelines contaminating the drinking water sources and in turn affecting people, alleged locals.

Chief District Medical Officer (CDMO) Dr Manoj Kumar Behera said a health team has been sent to the affected areas and they are constantly on the move in the town. He, however, denied any death due to the disease and said one K Gouda (90) had been bed-ridden for long and died on Saturday. Diarrhoea was not the reason, he added.  On Sunday, 11 more patients were admitted to Kabisuryanagar hospital.

Thirty-two patients are already undergoing treatment in the hospital. He said that the condition of all the 43 patients is stable.  The CDMO said the disease can be checked if the sanitary condition is improved.
