Student arrested in Odisha for harassment after alleged attempt to win over girl by force

A 19-year-old polytechnic student ended up in police custody after he tried coercive measures to win over the girl he was reportedly in love with.

BHUBANESWAR: A 19-year-old polytechnic student ended up in police custody after he tried coercive measures to win over the girl he was reportedly in love with. But not before publicly apologising for his acts in front of police station on Thursday.

Vishal Barik, a second-year student of Government Polytechnic in the City, has been charged with harassment, outraging modesty as well as criminal intimidation.

The drama happened when the 19-year-old used another female friend to send a message to the girl whose family reported the matter to Chandrasekharpur police. Police asked Vishal and the other girl to report. In full public view, the duo touched the girl’s feet and begged apology for their behaviour.

Vishal, the police said, had been chasing the girl for long despite the latter not showing any interest in him. He tried intimidating her and even assaulted her a few times. On one occasion, he allegedly even threatened to pour acid on her face if the girl did not reciprocate. However, the gritty girl did not change her stand. Then the accused roped in a female friend who tried to canvass for Vishal. The girl then intimated the matter to her family members who reported it to the local police.

Chandrasekharpur Police asked Vishal and his friend to come to the police station where they apologised. However, the family was in no mood to forgive the boy and lodged a formal complaint following which he was arrested.

Police slapped charges under Section 294/323/341/354/506 and 34 of the Indian Penal Code on the accused.
