JHARSUGUDA: Police detained a 17-year-old boy for allegedly raping a 4-year-old girl on Saturday. The girl was raped on Friday in Bajarpada village under Banharpalli police limits of Jharsuguda district. The victim’s mother had apparently requested the accused, Md. Rafique, to carry food for her mother (grandmother of the victim) to Telenpalli market under Banharpali police limits, where the latter had gone to fetch an LPG cylinder.

Before leaving for the market, the accused picked up the victim who was playing in the neighbourhood. Instead of going to the market first, the accused  took the victim to a secluded place and raped, police sources said. Later, he took her to the market and left her with the grandmother.

When the grandmother found the girl to be bleeding, she took her to a hospital at Ib Thermal and learnt it from the doctors that she was raped.  Later, she lodged an FIR with Banharpali police. “We have produced the accused before the Juvenile Justice Board and sent him to the Rourkela Children Rescue Home on Saturday,” police said.
