PARADIP: Panic gripped workers of Paradip Refinery of IOCL here on Wednesday after leakage of gas inside the plant premises on Wednesday. As many as four workers sustained injuries in the mishap.

The injured workers are Guru Nath of Bihar, Tapas Biswal of Naugaon and Santosh Majhi of Paradipgarh in Jagatsinghpur district and Ashok Mandal of Ramtara in Kendrapada district.

Sources said a contract agency had engaged its workers for construction work on the premises of the refinery. The workers were repairing a pipeline when there was a leakage of gas from a tank.

Experts from IOCL rushed to the spot and started repair work. Though the gas leakage has been controlled, it would take a few more days to repair the damage completely, the sources said.

An IOCL official said there is no threat of any kind to people because of the gas leak.

While IOCL authorities were tight-lipped about the cause of gas leakage, workers alleged that lack of safety measures and supervision of the plant officials are the main causes behind the mishap.

All the injured workers are undergoing treatment in a private hospital in Bhubaneswar.
