BHUBANESWAR: Many parts of Odisha have begun to feel the pinch of cold as the mercury goes on a downward slide. The cold conditions will continue till December 2 before a fresh system brings in more showers for the State.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), night temperature fell well below the normal in north, coastal as well as southern districts of the State.The lowest temperature of the day was recorded at Daringibadi where the mercury read 9 degree Celsius. Phulbani and Hirakud also reported below 10 degree C temperature, recording 9.5 degree and 9.7 degree C respectively.

Barring Malkangiri, Puri, Paradip and Gopalpur where the minimum temperature hovered around 16-17 degree C, the night temperature in all other stations was lower. In northern districts, the bite of cold was getting sharper. Keonjhar recorded 10.7 degree C while Baripada, Sambalpur and Sundargarh reported 12.5 degree, 12 degree and 13 degree C respectively.“The night temperature in northern Odisha was about four to five degree Celsius below normal. Over southern districts, the deviation was in the rage of two to three degree C,” Director of IMD, Odisha Sarat Chandra Sahu said.

Minimum in Bhubaneswar hit the 13 degree C mark on Saturday night. It was at least four degree below normal.Sahu said, the cold conditions will continue till December 2 before a fresh system begins to trigger rains around December 4-5.

A low pressure area is likely to form near Sri Lanka coast by November 29 and move close to Tamil Nadu coast. As per model predictions, the system will head northwards, parallelly to the coast.The system is likely to cross the coastline between northern Andhra Pradesh and southern Odisha. From the current predictions, it appears to head into southern pockets of Odisha.Under its impact, parts of the State will received showers. With incursion of moisture, temperature may rise from the present level but cold conditions will continue to prevail.
