JAGATSINGHPUR: With the onset of winter season, incidents of dacoities have increased manifold in rural areas of the district. While police have failed to nab the accused, villagers are spending sleepless nights to patrol in their areas and some times, they take the law into their own hands.On Sunday night, a thief was tied with a rope and thrashed by a group of people at Dabur village in Naugaon while he was allegedly trying to steal valuables from the house of Balunki Parida. 

Sources said four dacoits had entered Parida’s house to loot valuables and demanded keys of the cupboards. When family members refused, they were attacked. As one of the family members raised an alarm, the villagers rushed to the house. While three miscreants managed to escape, the villagers caught hold of one and thrashed him. Later, he was handed over to local police.IIC of Naugaon Sarbeswer Behera said on being informed, a police team rushed to the village and detained one person. Investigation is on to identify the accused, he added. The villagers alleged that due to lack of patrolling and negligence by police, the number of theft, smuggling cases and other antisocial activities is rising in the area. Despite repeated complaints, police have failed to act in this regard, they added.

In another case on Saturday, dacoits forcibly entered the house of one Bharat Chandra Das in Rambhadeipur village and decamped with `40,000 in cash and gold ornaments worth `three lakh at gunpoint. The accused persons are yet be identified.Similarly on Saturday night, three dacoits entered the house of Rashmiranjan Mohanty of Kamalpur village in  Biridi and looted `36,000 in cash and gold ornaments, one motorcycle and mobile phone from the house. Earlier, they had also looted the house of Mustafa Raza of Tanchana village.

Last week, three dreaded dacoits had looted the house of one villager in Sandhkuda in Paradip. Later, the slum dwellers nabbed them. The dacoits were identified as Deepak Das, Tuna Nayak and Ajay Swain. On being informed, Jatadhari Marine police rushed to the spot and arrested them.
