Naveen Patnaik cancels October 21 Bijepur visit

Sources within the party said the visit of the Chief Minister to the constituency has been rescheduled and the date will be announced later.

BHUBANESWAR: As the BJD is expecting announcement of by-poll to the Bijepur Assembly constituency within a couple of days following closure of the election case by Orissa High Court, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Tuesday cancelled his scheduled visit to Barpali on October 21.

Sources within the party said the visit of the Chief Minister to the constituency has been rescheduled and the date will be announced later.

Meanwhile, Naveen continued with announcement of projects for Bijepur constituency to woo the voters ahead of the by-poll. He inaugurated two bridges and one 33/11 KV power sub-station for Bijepur worth over `13.38 crore through video conferencing.

While the bridges are on Nagaon nullah and Kermali nullah on the Diptipur-Gaisilet road, the power sub-station was launched at Balitikira. Addressing the people at Bargarh through video conference, he announced the State Government decision to construct a road overbridge at Barpali level crossing. Naveen said the projects have been announced for the infrastructural development of Bargarh district.

Referring to the announcement of Gangadhar Meher Lift Canal System for Bargarh district and Parvati Giri Mega Lift Irrigation Project for Gaisilet block by him on Monday, the Chief Minister said the two projects will have an irrigation potential of 33,000 hectares. He said steps will also be taken for the economic development of farmers and weavers of the district.

Chief secretary AP Padhi, Development Commissioner R Balakrishnan, Bargarh MLA Debesh Acharya, chairperson of Bargarh panchayat samiti Manini Bhoi and senior officials were present.

While the BJD announced Ritarani Sahu, widow of Congress MLA Subal Sahu as candidate for the by-poll, BJP and Congress are yet to announce their nominees. The Congress has constituted a five-member observers’ committee headed by party MLA Naba Kishore Das to recommend possible candidates.
