ROURKELA: After  an infant succumbed to critical burn injuries at a private hospital in Bhubaneswar late on Monday, the Sundargarh district administration on Tuesday evening sealed Om Appolo Hospital at Civil Township here where the baby sustained burns on Saturday.  Reports said citing law and order problem following the death of the baby, the administration, after statutory formalities on Tuesday evening, sealed the hospital. Among others, Panposh Sub-Collector H S Behera, Rourkela Government Hospital (RGH) Director (in-Charge) Dr R C Behera, Executive Magistrate J B Das and RN Pali police station IIC Manas Swain were present.

Sub-Collector Behera said the hospital was sealed apprehending law and order situation, adding that the hospital’s renewal of clinical registration has been  pending since 2015 as it did not have fire safety clearance and was not having adequate fire-fighting equipment. The RGH Director said three babies, including twin babies,  were shifted to another hospital. Earlier, a recommendation was made for its closure for failing to meet the statutory norms.

The new-born, suffering from jaundice, was kept in the phototherapy unit of the hospital when between 4.30 am and 5 am on Saturday the bassinet of the unit caught fire. The hospital attendant rescued the baby, but not before it suffered more than 60 per cent burn injuries. The baby was immediately rushed to Ispat General Hospital here and  later shifted to Bhubaneswar, but the baby failed to survive.
