Odisha: CM Naveen Patnaik inaugurates three smart city projects

BHUBANESWAR: Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Monday inaugurated a slew of smart city projects including Bhubaneswar Operations Centre (BOC) - a state-of-the-art centralised command and control centre that will regulate all citizen-centric services in the Capital.

Patnaik inaugurated the BOC and the new smart city office of Bhubaneswar Smart City Limited (BSLC) on the fifth floor of BMC-Bhawani Mall at Saheed Nagar.

The first of its kind centralised command and control centre BOC will monitor, operate and control the existing services such traffic signal monitoring system, grievance management system, city transport monitoring system, solid waste vehicle tracking system, street light management system, city enforcement management system, water tanker management system.

BSLC Managing Director, Municipal Commissioner and BDA vice-Chairman said that the in the coming days more services will be integrated with BOC and the centre will also be able to monitor water-logging menace and provide real-time decision support to deal with the situation.

The modern centre set up with an investment of Rs 75crore, the biggest among all cities across India, will have a 24X7 surveillance mechanism in place. The state-of-art centre includes a massive video wall of more than 100-foot length (with 16 x 2 configuration of 70 inch panels) and shall be used to monitor traffic, the large volume of close circuit television (CCTV) footage, highly sophisticated sensor data and emergency services, etc.

It will provide a digital platform for integrating multiple city sub-systems of parking, public transport, and Common Payment Card along with Effective Emergency Response Management for any incident in the city, officials said.

The Chief Minister also inaugurated two more projects -- Smart Parks in Saheed Nagar and city-wide adaptive traffic signal control system. Under the smart park project six neighbouring parks in Saheed Nagar locality have been redesigned as interactive play spaces for children with several child friendly smart features.

While four different parks divided by lanes have been integrated as a single park. BDA-OMC park and triangular park have also been redeveloped. The city-wide adaptive traffic signal control system, on the other hand, is a smart city project which has been put in place for better traffic management and faster response to traffic conditions and emergencies.

The project is 100 per cent solar power operated and covers over 50 major intersections across the city. Eight pelican signals near schools and institutions for safe crossing by pedestrians and cyclists have been developed under the project, sources said.

Apart from inaugurating these projects, Patnaik also laid foundation stone for a sensory park for children with special needs and an integrated public service centre that will be developed on 'one space-multiple uses' concept and have facilities such as multipurpose hall, library, bill payment centre, dispensary, creche, skilling centre among others.
