More rain in store for 72 hours

Moderate to heavy rainfall is likely to lash large parts of Odisha in the next 72 hours under the influence of a low pressure formed over the northwest Bay of Bengal.

BHUBANESWAR: Moderate to heavy rainfall is likely to lash large parts of Odisha in the next 72 hours under the influence of a low pressure formed over the northwest Bay of Bengal.

India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Saturday informed that an associated cyclonic circulation up to 9.5 km above mean sea level has formed. The system may become a well-marked low pressure area during the next 24 hours, weather forecasters stated.

Director of Regional Meteorological Centre, Bhubaneswar, HR Biswas said, “A low pressure lies over the northwest Bay of Bengal due to which light to moderate rainfall will occur at most places in the State in the next 72 hours. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely to occur at one or two places in Gajapati, Ganjam, Puri, Khurda, Cuttack, Kendrapara and Jagatsinghpur districts on Saturday.”

Regional Meteorological Centre, Bhubaneswar, stated that on July 15, heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely at a few places over Sambalpur, Sonepur, Bargarh, Balangir, Nuapada, Boudh, Angul, Deogarh, Keonjhar, Kandhamal, Dhenkanal and Kalahandi districts. Biswas said monsoon trough will remain active for the next five to six days.

Centre for Environment and Climate (CEC) officials said another low pressure is likely to form in the Bay around July 19. This may cause moderate to heavy rainfall at many places in North Odisha till July 22, said CEC Director SC Sahu.

“The low pressure will lead to moderate rainfall at many places till July 18 but this will not compensate the 26 per cent deficit rainfall,” he added.
