19 malaria, 9 dengue cases reported in Kendrapara

As many as 19 malaria and nine dengue cases have been reported till June this year across Kendrapara district.

KENDRAPARA:  As many as 19 malaria and nine dengue cases have been reported till June this year across Kendrapara district. This was informed by Chief District Medical Officer (CDMO), Kendrapara Dr Baishnaba Charana Sahoo at a meeting to observe Anti-Malaria and Dengue Month here on Wednesday. Last year, 203 persons were affected by dengue in the district while the number was 291 in 2016, 146 in 2015, 180 in 2014 and 109 in 2013. Similarly, in 2017, about 82 cases of malaria were detected in the district while the number was 152 in 2016, 166 in 2015, 181 in 2014 and 109 in 2o13.

Dr Sahoo said the number of cases of dengue and malaria are on a decline in the district owing to preventive measures taken by the Health department. “Every year, we spend a large amount of money and resources on creating awareness, door-to-door checking and other such measures to check the spread of dengue. This year, we have alerted all doctors and other health workers of 65 government hospitals across the district to check the spread of the disease”, he said.

The CDMO said Guppy fish are known to feed on larvae of the mosquito that spreads the dengue virus. He said financial and professional assistance will be provided to those interested in breeding of Guppy fish in the district. Dr Sahoo also delved into the issue of shortage of doctors in Government hospitals in the district. He said as many as 101 doctor posts are lying vacant against sanctioned strength of 171.
