Vegetable prices soar in Koraput

Prices of vegetables have soared in Koraput district in the wake of incessant rains for the last one week.

JEYPORE:  Prices of vegetables have soared in Koraput district in the wake of incessant rains for the last one week. The vegetable demands of the locals are met by farmers of Borrigumma, Pottangi and Semiliguda, who cultivate different kinds of vegetables throughout the year. For the last one week, production of vegetables like cabbage, tomatoes, beans and brinjal has been low in these three areas due to rain.

While tomatoes, brinjals and cabbage are selling at `40 per kg, cauliflowers and beans are expensive at `60 a kg. Sources said the daily requirement of vegetables in four markets of Jeypore, Koraput, Damanjodi and Semiliguda is around 100 tonnes, but only 30 to 40 tonnes are being brought to the markets daily. They said crops have been damaged in rain resulting in scarcity and price rise.
