Life affected in South Odisha

Koraput on Friday received 90 mm rain and road communication from the district to Malkangiri was hit as water from river Saptadhara flowed over road at Govindpalli.

RAYAGADA/JEYPORE : Heavy rain in the last 24 hours has thrown normal life out of gear in Rayagada and Koraput districts. While a majority of rivers are swelling in Rayagada, road communication has been hit in Koraput. In Rayagada, the worst-hit is Bissamcuttack. Roads and houses in low lying areas were inundated in Kashipur. Koraput on Friday received 90 mm rain and road communication from the district to Malkangiri was hit as water from river Saptadhara flowed over road at Govindpalli.

Rivers Indravati, Jahanra, Saveri and Kolab are in spate. Villages in Borrigumma block have been cut off from the mainstream due to the swelling of Sankeri river near Bsinghpur. Village roads and culverts were damaged in Borrigumma, Kotpad, Kundra, Lamtaput and Damantpur. Low lying areas under Jeypore Municipality were also inundated. Hundreds of vehicles were stranded on Visakhapatnam-Raipur NH that passes through Koraput district. 

Admin warns against rafts
Rayagada Collector, Guha Poonam Tapas Kumar on Friday formed a committee to look into the dangerous practice of crossing Kalyani river using tube rafts in Kalyansinghpur block. Locals of the block are using tube rafts as a means of transport in absence of a fair weather temporary bridge over Kalyani river, which was washed away recently. The Collector had directed the Tehsildar to stop the practice.
