Odisha: Cop trying to stop brawl shot at

A police constable of the Special Branch,  identified as Soumendra Sethi (35), was shot at in Ranibagicha area of Sundargarh town police limits in Sundargarh district on Wednesday night.

SUNDARGARH:A police constable of the Special Branch,  identified as Soumendra Sethi (35), was shot at in Ranibagicha area of Sundargarh town police limits in Sundargarh district on Wednesday night. Sources said the constable was trying to stop a drunken brawl when he was shot at.  Sundargarh SP Soumya Mishra said the constable, who was hit in the neck, is out of danger and recuperating  at Ispat General Hospital (IGH), Rourkela.

She said the constable tried to stop some persons from fighting when at around 9.30 pm, one of  them fired at him. The SP said the constable was not on duty at the time of the incident, adding that efforts were underway to nab the culprit.

Police sources said the culprit, Krishna Gupta,  was drinking beer at a parlour at Ranibagicha area and picked up a quarrel with others. Police said Gupta and others came out of the beer parlour and as the heated altercation intensified, the constable tried to mediate. Gupta got peeved and opened fire at the constable. A case has been registered at Sundargarh  Town police station.
