Top cops of six States, including Odisha, met here on Friday to improve inter-state cooperation to arrest the spread of Left Wing Extremism (LWE) as well as tackle the host of organised crimes.

BHUBANESWAR: Top cops of six States, including Odisha, met here on Friday to improve inter-state cooperation to arrest the spread of Left Wing Extremism (LWE) as well as tackle the host of organised crimes.

Officers from Odisha, West Bengal, Chhattisgarh, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Jharkhand met at the Police Bhawan and deliberated on issues relating to inter-state security coordination and enhancement of intelligence collection.

Concerns over Maoist operations in inhospitable terrains of the State which could not be penetrated due to topography were discussed at the inter-state cooperation meeting of senior police officers here on Friday.
Informing about the meeting, DGP Dr RP Sharma said, matters pertaining to coordination, inter-security force cooperation and inter-state cooperation were discussed.

Besides this, enhancing intelligence collection and sharing during joint operations by different security forces and filling security gaps in certain pockets were discussed.
Senior Security Advisor to the Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India, K Vijay Kumar presided over the meeting. Senior officers of Border Security Force and Central Reserve Police Force were also present.

For the first time, Odisha Police conducted two separate review meetings to discuss both border security and Maoist menace.
At the Eastern Regional Coordination Committee meeting, senior officers of Odisha, West Bengal, Jharkhand and Bihar participated.

“Besides Maoist issue, other matters like organised crimes, cyber crimes, arms trafficking, narcotics and drugs trafficking, human trafficking, cattle smuggling and inter-State gangs were discussed,” said Dr Sharma. Some of the best practices which each police force adopt, training aspects related to intelligence, investigation and operations were also shared by the cops.

The meeting also discussed challenges for Odisha Police, Greyhounds of Andhra Pradesh and BSF due to security gaps caused by topography in certain pockets of the State. Measures for combating the Maoist menace in the cut-off areas of the State were deliberated.

On a day when senior police officers of Maoist affected States held a meeting, reports emerged that a letter was found in the house of a person arrested for his alleged links with Maoists. The letter stated that the Left ultras were mulling to carry out a Rajiv Gandhi type incident and suggested that Prime Minister Narendra Modi be targeted during his road shows. Odisha DGP Dr RP Sharma told The Express that they have no information about it and it was upon the intelligence officers to probe the matter. Dr Sharma also denied that the reports were not discussed during the meeting. Senior Security Advisor to the Ministry of Home Affairs K Vijay Kumar also denied about having any information.
