BHUBANESWAR:A day after clearing the air over selection of candidates for the 2019 Assembly and Lok Sabha elections, Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee on Wednesday decided to dismantle block level committees and strengthen Zilla Parishad zones as new organisational blocks.

“Each Zilla Parishad zone will now be considered as an organisational block and the party will nominate president for each block in consultation with district presidents,” OPCC working president and former MP Pradip Majhi said after a meeting with district presidents of southern zone. A meeting of party’s district presidents of southern zone, comprising 10 organisational districts, was held here where OPCC president took stock of the party position. This was the first meeting after AICC appointed new presidents and working presidents for the 33 DCCs on June 9.

It has been decided to do away with the existing (314) block level committees and each of the 872 ZP zones in the State will be strengthened as an oragnisational blocks. The process of formation of organisational units from panchayat to district level will be completed by June 30, Majhi told TNIE.

The booth-level machinery of the party will be activated by appointing a booth president who will be supported by three booth level agents. The DCC presidents have been asked to complete formation of booth level committees by July 10.

After formation of the booth level committees, the party will organise training programmes for booth level agents and the training programme will be completed by July 30, Majhi said. Wednesday’s meeting was part of the two-day meeting organised for DCC president of the party’s three organisational zones Majhi is in charge of the southern zone.

Patnaik said district committees have been asked to submit a report on organisational activities in their districts fortnightly and quarterly to clear as to who is working dedicatedly. This way Congress will win back people’s confidence and grow. “Those sitting in Bhubaneswar will not become leaders rather who are working at grassroots level and are connected with people will be party candidates,” Patnaik said.
