Forget monsoon cool, sizzling time to continue for a few more days

Odisha continued to be in grip of scorching heat with the Capital City and Baripada recording the highest temperature of 42.2 degree Celsius on Monday.

BHUBANESWAR:Odisha continued to be in grip of scorching heat with the Capital City and Baripada recording the highest temperature of 42.2 degree Celsius on Monday. Bhubaneswar continued to sizzle for the second consecutive day after witnessing 42.3 degree Celsius on Sunday.

Meteorological Centre, Bhubaneswar, informed that the temperature will continue to hover around 41 degree Celsius in the Capital and its adjoining areas for next 24 hours.“The heat wave condition will prevail in some parts of the State for 48 hours. However, we are expecting that the monsoon will revive in three to four days,” Director of Regional Meteorological Centre, Bhubaneswar HR Biswas told The Express.

Centre for Environment and Climate (CEC) Director Sarat Sahu said the heat wave conditions in coastal Odisha may continue till June 21 with northwesterly or westerly wind coming in from the north-northwest region causing the rise in temperature.

The temperature recorded in the Capital in the last two days was eight degrees above normal, CEC officials said. The north-westerly or westerly wind brought heat into Odisha after passing through huge dry land mass of the north-west and Central India. It was caused by a phenomenon known as ‘advection of heat’, meaning horizontal movement of air which absorbed heat gradually from the surface over Central India.

Another reason for the abnormal rise in temperature in the State could be due to transportation of ‘soot’ - black or brown carbon by strong westerly and north-westerly wind coming from the north-west region including, the Delhi region where severe pollution was experienced recently. Similar weather conditions were witnessed in 1973, 2004, 2009 and 2014, and such years are known as the years of erratic monsoon.
The other places which recorded over 40 degree on Monday include Talcher at 42 degree Celsius, Angul 41.9, Chandbali 41.7, Titlagarh 41.5, Balasore 41.2, Balangir 40.8, Cuttack 40.6, Dhenkanal 40.5.
