CM issues alert order for natural calamity

Agriculture department asked to observe the situation and activate the contingency plan, if necessary

BHUBANESWAR:As Odisha reeled under intense heat wave for the last several days, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Tuesday asked the Agriculture department to continuously observe the situation in coordination with the Odisha University of Agriculture and Technology (OUAT) and activate the contingency plan, if required.

Addressing the State level natural calamity committee meeting at the Secretariat here, the Chief Minister said in spite of the current rain-deficit situation, the Government should remain fully prepared to tackle the possible flood and cyclone to meet any eventuality. He asked the departments concerned to take adequate measures to put in place in time early warning system, rescue and relief operation, supply of drinking water, health, veterinary and other services. He directed all the departments to remain prepared to tackle natural calamities.

“Our State is prone to multiple and recurring natural disasters. Almost every year, the State experiences nature’s fury in shape of flood, cyclone and drought. Despite being so vulnerable to different natural hazards, we are well prepared to face any situation,” he said.

Stating that the Government had successfully managed drought, pest attack and unseasonal cyclonic rains and flood last year, the Chief Minister said though the south-west monsoon reached Odisha slightly ahead of the scheduled date and covered some parts, it suddenly weakened resulting in dry spell with hot and humid weather conditions across the State.

The Chief Minister directed the Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force (ODRAF) and fire services to remain alert for immediate response. He also asked the Food Supplies and Consumer Welfare department to ensure sufficient stock of food materials in vulnerable and inaccessible areas. Besides, the Agriculture department was asked to ensure provision of green fodder and opening of cattle camps during any natural disaster. The district collectors were also asked to keep the District Emergency Operation Centres functional round-the-clock.

He said special attention should be given to vulnerable population like children, pregnant women, physically and mentally challenged persons, widows and elderly people during relief and rescue operation.
