No respite from heat in sight

There is unlikely to be any relief from heat for the next few days. The Meteorological Centre, Bhubaneswar, on Wednesday informed that some places in the State will continue to record above normal temperature in the next 24 hours, but there will be no heat wave condition on Thursday.

BHUBANESWAR:There is unlikely to be any relief from heat for the next few days. The Meteorological Centre, Bhubaneswar, on Wednesday informed that some places in the State will continue to record above normal temperature in the next 24 hours, but there will be no heat wave condition on Thursday.

Director, Regional  Meteorological Centre, Bhubaneswar, HR Biswas told Express that “Isolated places may witness thunderstorm activity in the next 24 hours and overall the rainfall situation may improve between June 23 and  25.” Weather forecasters apprised that the temperature will continue to hover around 40 degree Celsius in the Capital and its adjoining areas for another day.

Earlier in the day, the department issued heat wave warning for several districts of the State for 24 hours. Heat wave condition would prevail at one or two places in Mayurbhanj, Balasore, Jajpur, Bhadrak, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Dhenkanal, Angul, Balangir, Subarnapur,  Boudh, Nayagarh and Khurda.

About eight places recorded over 40 degree Celsius on Wednesday with temperature at Angul touching 41.9 degree Celsius followed by Titlagarh at 41 degrees. Baripada’s temperature was recorded at 40.4 degree Celsius, Dhenkanal and Chandbali 40.2, Sambalpur 40.1 degree Celsius, Balangir and Sonepur recording 40 degree Celsius each.

Meanwhile, Special Relief Commissioner sources said they have received reports of 45 sunstroke deaths from 16 districts in the State. About 7 heat stroke deaths have been confirmed, while 38 others are still under examination. The maximum number of sunstroke deaths have been reported from Khurda district. At least 7 heat stroke deaths have been reported from Khurda, but no case due to sunstroke has been confirmed so far.
