SAMBALPUR: Debjharan, located around 30 km from Sambalpur city, and famous for its waterfall, will soon be developed into an eco-tourism site. Sambalpur Collector Samarth Verma said the State Government has already accorded administrative approval for development of Debjharan under Jujumura block in the district at an estimated cost of `94 lakh. The Forest department had earlier submitted a proposal in this regard.

He said the work on beautifying the scenic spot will start within a week. Verma said the development work will be executed by the Forest department and the latter has been notified in this regard. Facilities for boating will also be made available for visitors at the reservoir at Debjharan, he added.

Plans have been chalked out to develop nature’s trail, pathway to reach the waterfall, eco-tourism cell, floating jetty and watch tower at the spot. Besides, two check gates at Talijharan village and another at the parking place along with signage, pindi to sell forest produce and toilets will also be constructed at the spot for the convenience of tourists. Moreover, two boats worth `5 lakh each will also be available at the eco-tourism site.

The water of Debjharan stream is presently being utilised for a Minor Irrigation Project (MIP) at the location. A reservoir was developed after completion of the MIP at the spot. Apart from visitors, the waterfall also attracts a large number of picnickers from across the State from November to January. Debjharan currently witnesses a footfall of more than 30,000 tourists annually. The Forest department has planned to provide capacity building training to members of Vana Samrakshana Samiti (VSS) so that they can mange the spot after completion of the development work.
