JAIPUR: In a tragic incident, a newly married woman lost her life after being forced by her in-laws to terminate her pregnancy in advanced stage at the district headquarters hospital (DHH) in Jajpur town.
Though the incident took place on Sunday, it came to light on Monday when the father of the deceased lodged a complaint with the Chief District Medical Officer alleging negligence during abortion that resulted in the death of his daughter and her 24-week-old foetus.

As per reports, the deceased, identified as 22-year-old Fula Malik of Kothidia village under Dharmasala police limits in the district fell in love with Mitu Malik, aged 24. Both were in a relationship for the last two years. When Fula came to know that she was pregnant, she urged Mitu to marry her. Both tied the knot in court in presence of the girl’s family on September 14.

Wen Mitu took Fula to his house, his family refused to accept her as she was six months pregnant. The girl’s in-laws said they would accept her if she terminated her pregnancy.  “My daughter’s in-laws refused to accept her as she was pregnant. They agreed to accept her on the condition that she terminates her pregnancy,” said Fula’s father.

With no option left, Mitu contacted his uncle for a solution to the problem, but it yielded no result. Later, the boy’s uncle contacted a woman broker at the district headquarters hospital in Jajpur town who assured to abort the pregnancy for `7,000. Accordingly, Mitu took Fula to the hospital along with his uncle on Sunday and paid the woman broker. The girl was then taken to the Gynaecology department of the hospital where the abortion was allegedly conducted by a doctor and a nurse.

However, Fula died during the operation. “It was an illegal abortion as there is a ban on termination of pregnancy after 20 weeks. We are looking into the allegations. Action will be taken against those found guilty,” said an official of DHH. However, no FIR has been filed with the police in this connection so far.
