Aam Aadmi Party Talks ‘Clean’, Walks ‘Dirty’

Arvind Kejriwal-led Aam Aadmi Party has made anti-corruption movement along with decriminalision of politics its driving mantra. But in Odisha, as high as 38 per cent of its candidates for the first phase Lok Sabha polls have grave criminal records.

An AAP candidate, in fact, has the highest number of criminal cases and serious IPC counts pressed against him. Narendra Mohanty, the party candidate for Kandhamal district, has as many as nine criminal cases registered against him.

He has been charged on 28 counts of serious offences ranging from murder, attempt to murder, dacoity and rioting. Three charges of waging a war against the State has also been pressed against him. He has, though, not been convicted in any of the cases.

 Of the total eight candidates fielded by AAP in the first phase, three have criminal cases with grave charges against them.

 Satya Narayan Mahar, its candidate from Kalahandi Parliamentary seat, has cases of rioting lodged against him. The party candidate from Aska Prabhat Kumar also has criminal cases lodged against him.

 According to the analysis of affidavits of Lok Sabha candidates for the first phase elections by Odisha Election Watch, the average assets of its candidates is around `20.34 lakh.

 It also has a crorepati candidate in Dhanada Kanta Mishra from the prestigious Berhampur constituency, who has  declared assets and property to the tune of over `1.07 crore.

 Out of total 97 candidates analysed, 19 candidates to the tune of around 20 per cent have declared criminal cases against them. The BJP has 40 per cent of candidates with criminal records while the BJD has 20 per cent and the Congress 10 per cent.
