The BJP on Friday threatened to launch a Statewide agitation demanding immediate closure of 55 mines, identified by Shah Commission, in the catchment areas of Baitarani river.

BJP leader Sameer Mohanty said lease of 40 miners having 55 mines should be cancelled to safeguard the river. Environmentalists, social workers and activists will also be roped in for the purpose, he said.

Mohanty said agitation will be launched after visit of Narendra Modi, who is scheduled to address a convention in the Capital City on February 11.

Stating that the river is the lifeline of 48 blocks, spanning five districts, he said Baitarani is now in an alarming state due to the rampant mining in its catchment area.
