In a bid to promote generation of non-conventional energy in Odisha, the State Government on Friday decided to set up grid-based solar rooftop projects on PPP (public-private-partnership) mode.

A decision to this effect was taken at a high-level meeting presided over by Chief Secretary Jugal Kishore Mohapatra.

The State Government has set a target to produce 5 to 10 MW of solar power by installing rooftop solar power projects.

As a part of this exercise, it has been decided to start a pilot and replicable grid connected rooftop solar project on rooftop of non-residential government buildings here and in Cuttack.

It has also been decided to invite tenders from open market on competitive bidding.

A separate nodal agency would be in place soon for implementation of the solar projects in the State.

The Energy department has also been asked to complete the initial processes and identify buildings for the purpose within November 15. Secretary in the Energy department Pradip Kumar Jena said Odisha has a great potential for production of grid-connected solar energy. Various incentives are also available through State and Central Government schemes.

Around 1 KW power can be generated over a rooftop of 15 sq metre, which is available in small residential houses also.

He said the project will be extended to other areas after success of the pilot project.
