Dubbing Congress and BJP as ‘migratory birds’ who visit Odisha only during elections, BJD president Naveen Patnaik on Thursday said the two parties had all along ignored the interests of the State.

“Leaders of both Congress and BJP visit Odisha seeking votes during elections. But, where were they when the Phailin hit the State?” Naveen asked while addressing a public meeting here during his two-day whirlwind tour of Aska and Berhampur Parliamentary constituencies.

At Kalasandhapur, the Chief Minister said BJD is committed to the development of Odisha and the party has no other agenda than development of the State.

He urged the people to vote in favour of BJD candidates Debraj Mohanty and Ladu Kishore Swain.Referring to BJP Prime Ministerial candidate Narendra Modi and Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi’s statements that Odisha remained backward despite its rich mineral resources, Naveen said, “They (Modi and Rahul) are shedding crocodile tears. Do not believe them.”

Trying to strike an emotional chord with the people of Ganjam district, he said he started his political career from Aska in 1997 and thanked the people of Ganjam for facing cyclone Phailin bravely. At Kabisuryanagar, the Chief Minister said Ganjam was the workplace of his forefathers and he has been representing it for the last 14 years.

“The four crore people in Odisha are my strength and I will serve them till my last breath,” he said.  Naveen, who inducted scores of local representatives into BJD, said the latter will further strengthen the party. Describing the new members as the asset for BJD, Naveen expressed his displeasure over the party workers indulging in anti-BJD activities. “Disciplinary action would be initiated against such persons,” he added.  Despite scorching heat, more than 5,000 people gathered at the meeting place at mini stadium.

Among others, Revenue Minister Suryanarayan Patro, Aska MP Nityanada Pradhan, BJD candidate from Sanakhemundi Assembly segment Nandini Devi, former Rajya Sabha member Renubala Pradhan, Ganjam District Sugarcane Cultivators Union leader Samir Pradhan accompanied the Chief Minister.

Crude Bombs Seized

Before Naveen’s arrival at Soroda, police arrested two motorcyclists and seized four crude bombs from them. On a tip off, police detained them near the Soroda police station. The two were identified to be Block Congress president Kabiraj Swain and his supporter Chandrasekhar Gouda.
