Fanning the election fire in politically sensitive Mahakalapada Assembly seat, BJD president and Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Sunday made a scathing attack on BJP candidate Bijay Mohapatra by accusing him of being a back-stabber.

Addressing a gathering at Ramnagar under Mahakalapada segment in the district, Naveen said, “Biju Patnaik could not become the Chief Minister in 1995 for the second time because he was back-stabbed by one of his proteges.” In an indirect reference to Mohapatra, the BJD chief said the protege in question fielded Independent candidates in several places against party candidates with an intention to prevent Biju Patnaik from becoming the Chief Minister second time in a row. He predicted a defeat for Mohapatra in the coming elections.

With less than four days remaining for the general elections, Naveen has intensified his campaign in the segment to prevent the entry of his bete noire Mohapatra to the State Assembly.

This is the second time in two weeks where Naveen lambasted the BJP candidate while addressing meetings in the constituency.  Mohapatra had bore the brunt of Naveen’s ire on April 2 as the Chief Minister lashed out at the former for betraying Biju Patnaik in 1995 while addressing a meeting at Jadupur in Mahakalapada.

At least 30,000 Bengali voters, mostly immigrants from Bangladesh, will decide the fate of the candidates in the elections. In order to gain the community’s favour, the candidates are leaving no stone unturned to appease them. With an eye on the community’s sizeable vote bank, Naveen said, “The BJD Government has already provided land to several Bengali speaking landless persons. Those, who have been left out, will get land pattas from the Government soon.”

Former MLA Arabinda Dhali also addressed the gathering in Bengali in order to woo the voters of the community. Kendrapara MP candidate Baijayant Panda, Mahakalapada MLA nominee Atanu Sabyasachi Nayak and other leaders also addressed the meeting.

Notably, Naveen had prevented Mohapatra from contesting the Assembly elections in 2000 from Patkura segment by denying him the party ticket at the last moment.

Atanu contested the election on a BJD ticket but was defeated by a margin of more than 50,000 votes to Trilochan Behera, who was supported by Mohapatra. However, in 2004 elections, Atanu managed to  defeat Mohapatra who was contesting on a Odisha Gana Parisad ticket. In 2009 elections,  BJD’s Bed Prakash Agrawalla defeated BJP’s Mohapatra by a margin of 26,735 votes in Patkura Assembly segment.

This time, Mohapatra has locked horns with BJD candidate Atanu and Congress’ Balaram Parida from Mahakalapada.
