Six Poachers Arrested for Hunting Migratory Birds

The Chilika Wildlife Division has gone after poachers and arrested six persons in the last three days for hunting migratory birds from different parts of the lagoon.

On Tuesday, the enforcement squads arrested one villager from Sundarpur and seized from his possession four shovellers.

Similarly, on Monday, two more poachers, both minors, were arrested from Deipur village for hunting a Northern Pintail. A day before, the sleuths arrested three persons for snaring and poaching Purple Moorhens. All the huntings have taken place under Tangi Wildlife Range.

With the new year setting in and revellery mood all around, poachers have been on the overdrive. To take on the hunters, the wildlife division has deployed extra manpower.

Contacted, Divisional Forest Officer BP Acharya confirmed the three incidents and said, vigilance has been enhanced around the region to thwart the incidence of poaching.

This is the peak season for migratory birds and the Division will undertake the annual estimation on January 11 and 12.
