Despite stringent measures against ultrasound clinics in the city, a woman allegedly died here on Monday after being forced to undergo an abortion. She was four months pregnant.

The complaint lodged with Pattapur Police stated that the victim, Sujata Moharana, had come to the city with her husband, Jagannath Moharana of Dera street in Kankorada under Pattapur police limits, for an ultrasound test.

When the tests showed that she carried a girl child, her husband allegedly forced her to abort it. The couple were earlier blessed with a girl child in 2010.

However, Sujata’s condition deteriorated after the abortion and she had to be shifted to MKCG Medical College and Hospital. The profusely bleeding Sujata died here.

Following her death, Sujata’s father, Sudarsan Moharana of Masiakhali village under Sadar police limits, lodged a written complaint with Pattapur Police.  Accordingly, Pattapur IIC Krushnachandra Sethi seized the body at MKCG Medical and sent it for autopsy.

The police are also trying to identify the clinic where the ultrasound test and abortion were conducted.
