2 killed, 12 hurt in bus-lorry collision

TIRUNELVELI: Two persons were killed and 12 injured when a private bus collided with a lorry at Thatchanallur near here on Wednesday.

The bus was on its way from Kovilpatti to Tirunelveli on Wednesday morning. Raju of Aladipatti was driving the bus. The driver lost control of the bus when it was nearing the Thatchanallur North Bypass road and the bus collided with a tipper lorry parked along the roadside. Amutha, a passenger in the bus, died on the spot and Jayakodi, who was seriously injured, died at Tirunelveli Medical College Hospital (TMCH).

The injured passengers, bus conductor, Irulappasamy, Murugan, Shanmugathai, Veluthai, Suseela, Aruna, Mahadevan, Vijayalakshmi, Shanmugam, Muthachi, Shanmugavadivu and Krishnaveni, have been admitted to the Tirunelveli Medical College Hospital for treatment. The front portion of the bus has been heavily damaged. The driver’s negligence is said to be the cause for the accident. “The driver was speeding while talking over a mobile phone,”the injured passengers told the police.

Police deputy commissioners, Avinash Kumar and Manickarao, met the injured at the hospital and are investigating. The driver of the bus has been arrested.
