CHENNAI: The Garib Rath Express that was flagged off amidst much fanfare by the former Railway Minister Lalu Prasad is now depicting a picture of neglect. Passengers term the Express that runs between Chennai and New Delhi, as one of the worst examples of maintenance.

“It seems that the railway department is concerned only about the Duranto point-to-point service, as this is a pet project of Railway Minister Mamta Banerjee,” said Sabarish Misra, a passenger from New Delhi on Friday.

Despite being a long distance train, it does not have a pantry car. “Food items are taken at a major station and then distributed among passengers. In case, the train halts for a long time in the middle of nowhere, this kind of arrangement will create more trouble for passengers,” said Smita, another passenger.

The sorry state of affairs does not end here. “Toilets are filthy and bedlinen are often seen piled up near the toilets. Also there is no proper arrangement to store bedsheets, pillows and blankets,” lamented some passengers.

Southern Railway officials were not available for comment.
