Officials attached to the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC) on Saturday conducted raids at residences of former Vellore MLA C Gnanasekaran in Vellore and Chennai and confiscated some documents.
Led by Vellore DSP Balasubramanian, the team arrived in the morning at the former MLA’s house in Sathuvachari and waited for him to arrive, since he was not at home. The raid went on for about six hours.
A visibly annoyed Gnanasekaran told mediapersons that he came to know of enquiries being conducted by officials in his native town regarding his properties for the past six months. “I had submitted a petition to the Chief Secretary, Home Secretary and the Chief Minister’s Office in protest, and to stop these enquiries without my knowledge,” he said. “I have never held the office of a minister or any other position. No complaints of corruption were ever filed against me. I have been paying my Income Tax regularly,” he added. “The raid is being conducted to bring discredit to my name and as part of a vendetta by the State government,” he pointed out.
“The department has filed a case against me on the grounds of amassing wealth disproportionate to the known sources of income for the year 2007-2008. I would face the case legally and come out clean,” he added.
Some of his supporters, who had assembled near his residence, raised slogans against the ruling government.
Raids were also conducted at the MLAs residence in Vellakuttai near Vaniyambadi, where his brother C Gunasekaran lives, and in Valasaravakkam in Chennai, where his son Naveen lives with his family.
In Vaniyambadi, an eight-member team, including Tiruvannamalai DSP Rajkumar and Inspector Rajinikanth, conducted searches for nearly seven hours. Sources said that the team had confiscated some important documents from the house.
