A delegation comprising Congress MPs from the State would meet Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to press the latter for allocating 1,000 MW of power generated from the Koodankulam Nuclear Power Plant (KKNPP) to Tamil Nadu.
Announcing this at Sathyamurthy Bhavan here, Tamil Nadu Congress Committee (TNCC) president B S Gnanadesikan on Sunday said the delegation will call on the Prime Minister regarding this. “We are meeting Union MoS (Independent charge) Ministry of Power, Jyotiraditya Scindia on Tuesday, to highlight the same demand. We are optimistic that the Centre would address it favourably,” he said. Asked for his comments on the observations made by Union MoS for Power K C Venugopal, who had earlier pointed out that Tamil Nadu can’t seek the entire power produced from KKNPP, the TNCC chief clarified that the minister had only spoken about an agreement pertaining to sharing of power from KKNPP between the four southern States.
Apparently, he said the Centre has begun the process of connecting the southern power transmission grid with the national grid at the cost of `1,900 crore. The work is expected to be completed before next year, which would pave the way for additional power transmission for Tamil Nadu, he claimed.
On the Cauvery water row, Gnanadesikan sought to impose article 356 on Karnataka on the grounds for disobeying the orders of the Supreme Court. “The Prime Minister is acting in favour of Tamil Nadu over the Cauvery river water dispute, despite Karnataka going for polls next April,” he said.
Earlier, he inaugurated a free eye and medical camp organised in connection with the 67th birthday of AICC president Sonia Gandhi at the TNCC headquarters here.
