‘Unit-II commissioning likely in three months’

Union Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office, V Narayanasamy, on Sunday expressed hope that the Koodankulam Nuclear Power Plant (KKNPP) would be commissioned by the month-end.

The final inspection was being conducted after obtaining permission from the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board last month he said. Once Unit-I is commissioned, work on commissioning Unit-II would commence. The second unit will be ready for commissioning in three months, he said. 

Narayanasamy said four more atomic power plants would be set up at four locations, including Jaitapur in Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Haryana and Madhya Pradesh.

The Central government had allotted Rs 500 crore for the development of Koodankulam area. Of it, Rs 200 crore was given to the Tamil Nadu government and the State is implementing various projects very effectively. To provide housing facility for the residents, Rs 300 crore was allotted, he said.
