Pondy seeks TN infrastructural support

Puducherry Chief Minister N Rangasamy urged the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa to extend support in supply of building materials to the Puducherry and Karaikal regions as construction activities had been hampered due to non-availability of raw materials.

Speaking at the 25th meeting of the Southern Zonal Council at Bengaluru on Friday, Rangasamy urged the Centre to support Puducherry for development of infrastructure facilities like sea port, roads, railways and tourism-related facilities.

Further, he sought the intervention of Union Home Minister to lift the ban on recruitment for various posts in the Union Territory and for strengthening coastal security. He said proposals had been submitted to the Centre for strengthening the police force here, especially the coastal security.

Although implementation of coastal security was being monitored at the highest level, despite the best efforts by the Union Territory, it was not able to progress much as posts, especially the technical ones, to man the boats could not be filled up because of the Central government ban on recruitment, he said.

Stating that economic growth of any region was dependant on industrial growth, he sought the inclusion of Puducherry in the peninsular region industrial development corridor. He suggested that land measuring 336.13 hectares in Puducherry region and 595.41 acres in Karaikal region acquired for the purpose of Special Economic Zone could be utilised for the purpose. It would help curb unemployment problem prevailing in the Union Territory, Rangasamy added.

Pointing at the problems of coastal erosion, he expressed satisfaction with the forum for discussing the issue.
